Panosteitis is a painful condition causing lameness in young, large-breed dogs. It is most common in German Shepherds, and typically occurs when the dog is between 5 and 18 months of age. It usually begins with an acute onset of lameness in one front limb, which can then shift to occur in all limbs. The affected limbs are often painful when pressure is placed on the bones. This can be easily diagnosed with x-rays, and it is not a serious condition. It is not known what causes this condition. Treatment consists of anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin, for the pain. Dogs will often have recurring episodes of pain between 6 and 18 months of age, but the condition should completely clear up by the time the dog is 18 months old. There are generally no long term harmful effects.
